The view from the Ski Jump, looking down the Arroyo. |
This view gives you an idea of how steep the cliff might be to the right, and how level the Ski Jump is. All the surrounding territory is STEEP AS HELL, so the flatness of the Ski Jump is remarkable.
The approximate location of the Ski Jump is circled in red. I need to get my GPS reading and check it.

We took some time to saw down the great big limb that was blocking the shooting bench. Craig was the tallest, so he was elected to cut it down, and we handed him the monster chainsaw (seen in photo at right, at Bill's feet). Bill helped to steady him. The postion was off balance and overhead, so they both got covered with sawdust, so badly that it got down their clothes. They both had to take off their clothes in part to get rid of the sawdust, which in the heat and sweat stuck like glue and itched terribly. I promised Craig a fig leaf, so there it is.
These plants were seen:
Tarweed
The flower is a bright yellow, with very small and insignificant leaves. These were collected just above the road, above Bobcat Corner. It is also common in South Flat, as you start up the Van Horn Trail. It is sticky, odorous, and gets a green-yellow mess on your hands when you pick it. Made a great flower arrangement with the fuscia, however. You can see it on the picnic table picture above.
Wild Grape
Wild grapes grow in the Fern Creek area, sometimes with bases that are over 5 inches in diameter. They grow high up into the trees. These were photographed along the way to the Ski Jump.
California Fuscia
This specimen was found just below the road, just above Bobcat, where there is a seep. It was growning around a rocky outcropping. It is also found on Hummingbird, and is the reason it is called that, since hummingbirds frequent the long corolla flowers. They are also found in Fern Creek.
