David's Story
I mosied out to North Flat and eased into my blind. The evening was early, with sunlight still on upper North Flat. I was only waiting about 15 minutes until this guy showed up at the usual place, right at the top of North Flat:
I shot several times, with disappointing results: all the shots were blurry or out of focus. I was using my Nikon CoolPix through my Leicas. Better shots were obtained as he walked into the open, when I rested both the binocs and the camera on a branch in my blind:
He paused at the top, under the cover of the oaks, then walked very quickly out into the open. He was tall and the forks were good, as you can see. My pulse was up, but I decided not to shoot, preferring to torture Guy and Craig later that night.
He passed under the two oaks that are in the open, then sat down for a rest, just to the left of the open space. I could see him through the branches of a bay tree. He rested only about 10 minutes then slowly got up, fed a bit, and then headed towards the cabin and water, I presume.
A doe and two fawns came out later, in broad daylight, from the oaks to the right of the road. They stayed near the treeline, went along Minnich's Roost, then above Doe Heaven and into the trees, disappearing where the buck went.
Guy, having a vastly inferior guide, saw nothing and came back to camp emptyhanded. Bill saw only a few on the other side.
Digital cameras being what they are, I revealed to Guy the great trophy he would have had if he had gone with me, and berated Craig for failing to lead his client to game. Craig was quite game in taking all my abuse, and a good time was had bantering about.
