Snow day in Ely, internet in the motel.
Quick update: I have seen squat...not a deer in Mclaughn Canyon (sp), the butt of one fawn (I jumped them out of their bed while looking for sign), and 7 does crossing the road by a ranch. I winged a coyote: called, I saw it at about 100 yrds (paced a little farther) quartering away ande trotting...took a chance, smacked it, went down biting its shoulder, I waited for it to die but it got back up (still biting its shoulder) and I tried again, just over the top and away it ran at fullspeed. I couldn't find blood, seemed like more than a graze, perhaps the winter coat catches is all.

I was afraid of getting snowed in up high so I came down and have been traipsing all over the foothills...very little sign. I talked to a NV biologist who gave me a jump (darned seat warmers were on while I was listening to the radio) and while she admitted to not working on animal numbers (she did mine reclaiming) she thought the Schell Creek herd was in good shape.

For scale, note the rifle in the picture.
