The Schedule for the Year 2007
The meeting date is the second Tuesday of the month and the time is 7:00 pm for food and cases. Noah has observed that we either have to start the Journal (ie, end cases) by 8:30 pm or change the name to Cases Club. Late-comers will be requested to save their cases to after Journal Club. If you are the host, bring a view box. If you do not have one, let David know at least one day in advance and he will bring the Jay Hann-VA Viewbox. If you cannot attend, please email the host at least a day in advance, as this helps them to plan the food. If less than 24 hrs, please call.

The final meeting was December, hosted by Kendrick. In attendance were all but Shelly and Monty, which means that Kendrick, Bob, Bill, Lisa, Rebecca, Charlotte, Noah, Mat, Doug, Relton, and David were present. A wonderful dinner prepared by Ruth was served, starting with a variety of smoked meats and cheese, then a lentil soup with Parmesian cheese. Baked chicken was followed by chocolate cake and coffee.
Novermber was hosted in style by Shelly. In attendance were Kendrick, Noah, Doug, Bob, Rebecca, Charlotte, Monty, Relton, Shelly, and myself. Missing were Mat, Bill, and Lisa. Cases were discussed over excellent cheeses (including a Gouda, Camembert, and a creamy cheese so rich at first taste I thought it was butter: I immediately resolved not to check my cholesterol for at least a week!). Shelly ransacked his wine cellar and brought out many choice wines, including some excellent reds 19 years old and without a hint of tannin. Dinner was lasagna and salad, with cheesecake and chocolate cake and coffee. The food and company could not be beat. And we actually covered the journal! Kendrick will host December, and Lisa was volunteered to do January.
October was hosted by Rebecca. I was in Wyoming, deer and elk hunting, so I missed the meeting. Here is Noah's report: "Journal Club was held at Becky's, and who walked in but the Dalai Hoffman himself, resplendent in his saffron robes, just in from his pilgrimage to Bhutan. After a little Buddhist meditation, we literally blew through April, so May next month. Becky's outstanding cooking made Bill very nervous, who apparently will be enrolling in some cooking classes before his next hosting, as he such a competitive guy. So while we sadly did not have a large gathering, thanks again to Becky, and for the record you guys should have called." Hoffman and Billings seconded the fact that the food was great.
September was hosted by Mat, without any trace of construction! Mat and Nancy were gracious hosts and we all enjoyed the remodeled home. We got to meet Mat's new son, Josh, who was busy running around and pushing buttons. An engineer in the making! In attendance were Shelley, Relton, Bob, Kendrick, Lisa, and David; Monty was in Japan, and Rebecca, Noah, Charlotte were missing. Mat served roast beef and a killer chocolate cake for dessert. We did a lot of talking but failed to get much of the Journal done, so the work has been left up to Rebecca, who will be hosting the next issue. I will be away (Wyoming, deer and elk), so someone else will have to wield the whip.
August was hosted by Relton, and an evening it was, with Relton, Bob, Mat, Bill, Monty, Kendrick, Doug, and David in attendance. Rebecca was fixing a hip, Lisa was at Children's, and Charlene was with children. Mat was back from China, with a great new son, Joshua, 2 1/2. Great pictures were passed around and we had a toast to Mat and Nancy. Relton started us off with wine, cheese, and crackers, then served baked boneless chicken breasts with tomatoes from his garden, nickel beans from the garden as well, cucumbers, and rice. His wife made us baklava that went very well with the evening's coffee and comraderie. The April issue was short and dispatched shortly; nothing to change our practices was noted, unfortunately. Cases were discussed, as usual. Noah had an A-PRC case of a lifetime, referred by Relton: a jet-set patient who flies experimental jets. We await more than one week followup, but by that time, the patient was back flying. Noah also regrettably announced that he cannot host the wine weekend, being out of town the most of the month of October. Bob moved that we meet for J Club and was unanimously supported. Volunteer, anyone?
July was hosted by Monty. Present were
Brown, Billings, Hoffman, McCarroll, Cardon, Yu, Weiss, Lee, with a first appearance by Lisa Lattanza and a surprise appearance by her fellow.
Absent:
Nelson, Chin, Masem, Shum.
We made no changes in discussion style because the fellow was there. Discussed a couple of cases, discussed arthroscopic PRC (Noah is under an hour), knocked off Feb 2007. Consensus was it was a lousy issue.
Food from Ajanta;
saag paneer, lamb korma, chana masala dal, roti, pappadam, basmati, moong dal, various chutneys. Wines:
Brouilly, Rosso di Montalcino, Dolcetto d'Alba, another Italian red I can't recall.
Some chocolate cake, don't recall, did not eat any. (Reported by Kendrick.)
Noah stated the the Oct 20 wine tour is off calendar. Will investigate.
June's meeting was our first edition of meeting on the second Tuesday. It was hosted by Kendrick. Present were
Brown, Hoffman, Chin, McCarroll, Cardon, Yu, Weiss, Lee, Masem; missing was Nelson, Shum, Billings. Kendrick's fare included an assortment of tapas, with various Spanish white wines (a white Rioja Marques de Caceres, a Rene Barbier Catalunya white, and a third I don't recall); then grillled short ribs, assortment of BBQ sauces, grilled asparagus, green salad. The dinner included some red wines Kendrick received from patients, including a B. R. Cohn cabernet, a Neyers Syrah, Rubissow Sargent Les Trompettes.
Don't recall dessert. (Reported by Kendrick. You may have noticed Kendrick's not much for dessert).
May's meeting was more exciting than normal, as we were not sure that day where we were meeting. However, Bill Billings pulled off a great meeting, first reading the schedule above and then putting together a great meal of stuffed pork chops and squash. He started with a selection of cheeses and crackers, with some of his cellar's select reds, and the evening feast finished with a chocolate cake (Bill knows my weaknesses) and a lemon cheesecake. Dare I use that last word to introduce a potential new member, Rebecca Lee. Becky is in practice with Monty, trained with Larry Schneider, and has been out of training now some three years. She was very quiet, but we depend on her keeping things in order later when this rough crowd goes off the deep end, taking mallet fractures in the OR and other foolishness. There were some notable cases, such as a Kendrick case with more than 30 seconds of followup. Members present were Monty, Doug, Kendrick, Noah, Bob, Bill, and myself. Relton refused to cross the bridge (it having burned down and all), Mat, Charlotte, and Shelley were also out. We also hoped that Lisa Littanza would be able to join us, and again struggled with the change of night issue. Relton was not present, but some recalled that changing the night was going to be a problem for him. Will discuss by email and try to resolve, hoping to accomodate Lisa. Next up: two issues of the Journal (the J.N. did not push hard enough last time and wasted time this evening finishing Oct. I was roundly criticized and told not to dawdle any more. I have reformed: one night, one Journal, fini kaput) at Kendrick's house.
April was a great meeting, with our mentor, Bill Newmeyer. Great congeniality with had with Bill and Nancy. We feasted on a meatloaf by Bill and great wine. Cookies and pie followed, and Nelson liberally took advantage of both options. Cases were discussed but not much of the Journal. We also discussed the issue of expanding the group. Opinions were offered by all, with the consensus that we needed to first poll the missing members. They have been polled, and we have asked Rebecca Yee and Lisa Littanza to join us for May. Lisa probably will not be able to attend the third Tuesday, and the issue was raised about changing the meeting date. Due to interlocking commitments in each of our lives, changing the date was not looked at favorably, but was not ruled out. We also discussed who is hosting when, with Bill Billings on for next month.
March got us back in swing, with a great homemade stew by Bob Hoffman. Present were Relton, Doug, Mat, Kendrick (daughter Alex had just set the national record swimming for Amherst in the 800 free relay, swimming the third leg on the relay team, and she was home, so he had to leave early, but we excused him), Noah (vines are still dormant), Monty, Bill (we forgave him for being on call, the nerve!), and David. Cases were discussed, we decided that there was no consensus on cubital tunnel, either primary or revision (like the rest of the ASSH), and proceeded to the Journal, led by the Journal N**i Nelson. We killed the entire September (some interesting articles but nothing that was going to change our practices). We divvied up the next few months (see above), and adjourned. Monty is chairing the May 11 SF Bay Area Hand, with Larry Schneider speaking. Distal Radius course is May 4-6.
February was a bust. We assigned Bill Billings the month of February in absentia, which turned out to be a bad idea. By the time he got his call schedule, it was too late to find a Lord High Substitute, so February was cancelled. Lesson: plan better.
January started off with a bang, with Mat and Nancy serving a wonderful selection of shrimp, cheeses, stuffed mushrooms, and all sorts of things; and just when we were all full, they announced that that was just the hors d'oeuvres, and brought out a beef roast! A great banquet. The Journal was finished. Present were Doug, Relton, Kendrick, Bob, Shelly, Monty, Noah, and David; missing were both Bills and Charlotte. Bill Billings was not present, so he was assigned Feb (confirmation pending).
