Journal Club

The Schedule for the Year 2014

The meeting date is the second Tuesday of the month and the time is 7:00 pm for food and cases. Noah has observed that we either have to start the Journal (ie, end cases) by 8:30 pm or change the name to Cases Club. Late-comers will be requested to save their cases until after Journal Club. If you cannot attend, please email the host at least a day in advance, as this helps them to plan the food. If less than 24 hrs, please call.

October report is by Relton: We had chocolate /chocolate/ chocolate cake for desert. Present were: McCarroll, Weiss, Billings, Lee, Hoffman, Yu, Redlin and Masem. Appetizer was: cheese plate with Brie, Gouda, Manchego and Saint Agur with crackers and seedless grapes. Dinner was:  black pepper/ Shiitake mushroom crust roast beef tenderloin with Marchands de vin sauce, scalloped potatoes baked in cream and buttered peas. Wines of the night were: 2012 Hafner chardonnay, 2001 Schug pinot noir magnum, 2011 Lucien Boillot Gevrey-Chambertin, and 2011 Faury Côte-Rôtie. The August 2014 JHS was dispatched and declared done. Yes, David, even with six wrist/scaphoid articles.

August is reported by Bob: Attending were Doug, Hillary, Becky, Kendrick, Josh and me. We were lucky to have my sister  -in-law visiting who has wonderful culinary skills. The meal was: appetizers of endive with goat cheese, figs and balsamic vinegar, assorted cheeses and olives. Main course of pork tenderloin with french figs and fig sauce, roast potatoes and green beans. Topped off with a home made dessert of puff pastry and fresh berry galette. Wines from Stag’s Leap and Girgich Hills. It was definitely a race but we got through the bulk of the June journal. Hope to see you next month.

July was hosted by Mat, with Bob, Relton, Becky, Bill, and David in attendance. Mat took us to the third floor for a wonderful view of Alameda and to meet his hirsute son, Bert, who has certainly grown up since we last met him. He is taking the MCAT this week! Good luck, Bert! Then, to top that, Becky revealed wedding plans for 12/13/14, which she assured us was an auspicious date. Mat's daughter Amy and her friend did the cooking, and we had a wonderful cheese roll with our wine, then baked salmon and salad. Coffee and strawberry shortcake (on a muffin rather than on shortcake). There were no case presentations (that I can recall, correct me if I am wrong), so we moved to the Journal, which began with four distal radius cases, so Nelson was happy. Bob, to be contrary, noted that we had discussed starting with the back of the journal and the review papers, so that is where we began. Clair Manske had an article on radial longitudinal deficiency, concluding that distraction with an external fixator was not helpful. The issue was successfully covered, from back to front. Nelson also brought an article from JBJS on bilateral simultaneous carpal tunnel release, by Gelberman, Boyer, and Goldfarb. Relton felt that that article would change his practice more than any other we had reviewed, which is quite an endorsement, indeed. Bob is the next host, please remember we are now meeting on the second, not third, Tuesday.

June was hosted by Kendrick, and it was our first move to the second Tuesday. Nelson forgot about the change and missed a great evening. Kendrick filed this report: Finished April 2014 JHS.  Attending.  Mat Lisa Hilary Becky Bill Noah. Smoked trout salad, puree of canellini beans, crudites, green salad, costolette di maiale alla modenese (Pork chops braised in tomato and sage sauce), asparagi alla griglia (grilled asparagus), zucchini alla griglia (grilled zucchini), some kind of dessert (can you tell I don't eat much dessert?).

Wines were all California Rhonish, in a burst of patriotic spirit.  I think was a Tablas Creek rousanne, Qupe syrah, Bonny Doon carignane. And, by the way, we did the Journal.

May was hosted by David at the last moment, and held at Loring Café, in their delightful loft. Sequestered there, with wine and hors d'oeuvres, were Bill, Noah, Relton, Hillary, Mat, and Bob. The food was wonderful, only exceeded by the quality of the company. We reviewed a few cases and the virtues of the new Tesla, then proceeded to skim the Journal, since few had read it in any depth.

It has come to our attention that Lisa’s taste in cocktails eschews Manhattans and gravitates to California Coolers, so the issue of moving from the third Tuesday to the second Tuesday was raised. I believe the most persuasive argument for the change was to get Lisa to provide a luxurious dinner for us all. There seemed to be no problem with that move previously, but it is open for review. Based on the previous discussion, can we make the move to second Tuesday unanimous, and make Lisa start taking on more hosting duties? If so, Kendrick, you make the call: do you want to host on June 10 or June 17?

February was hosted by Noah at the Capris Restaurant in Tiburon. If you remember, he had been drafted at the last meeting because he was not present to object, and responded to this draft with graciousness. Present were Kendrick, Bill, Hillary, Relton, David and Noah as host. We had a private room in the basement and excellent, attentive service. Noah picked the restaurant well, the food was marvelous, and we all had a great time. Noah brought some wine that had been given to him as a gift, as well as selected from the restaurant's collection. While dessert and coffee were served, we pranced through the Journal, which included an article on Materialize, which will also be the subject of the May meeting of the San Francisco Bay Area Hand Club, which will be held at UCSF on Parnassus. Monty is up for the next meeting, but we need volunteers for April and May.

January was hosted by Doug at Loring Cafe, which was a delightful location. We had an upstairs attic, which was quiet and private. The food was marvelous and the company even better. Along with Doug, we had Bill, Becky+1, Hillary, Monty, Relton, Kendrick, and David. A few cases were discussed, including a rare one by Relton: a PRC that failed after 8 years. No known cause. The original surgeon was Relton, so we know it was done well. They generally do well, the group could find no reason for the failure. Instructive. David was late (not unusual!), due to a 3 day-old lunate dislocation that walked in at 4:30 pm, the merits of dorsal vs. dorsal & volar approaches was debated. Lots of opinions but little literature.

The group insisted that February be awarded to Noah, because he was not there to object and because he has not hosted for a bit.
